I believe that it’s very difficult for a person with the rank of major to be a coward. Because in order to get this title you need to do a lot of bold actions.
Also, the life experience of a major does not allow him to superficially judge people. He believed that courage is not the main quality of a person. Major did not believe in courage. Indeed, in one situation a person can be frightened and run away from danger, and in another situation the same person can commit a heroic act and thereby save many human lives. In my opinion, courage is a relative concept. And for everyone there is a time when he must show courage.

Of course, the major’s reasoning that soldiers should not marry and that you don’t have to get what you can lose, on the one hand, speaks of the fear of the major. On the other hand, the major gave friendly advice that you should not risk the feelings of a loved one. The fact that if a married soldier dies in the war, it will cause great pain to his wife.

I also consider unfair the opinion of those soldiers who do not respect people who received awards not for military merit. After all, the protagonist of the story, the American did not have to go to war, it was not his war. But he still arrived, he wanted to help them, it was his personal desire to help another country.

In conclusion, I want to say that it does not matter whether the major was brave or not. More important are his human qualities. What kind of person he was and his attitude towards people.
