Write about the fate of Oliver Twist

Dickens was only 25 when he started writing Oliver Twist. Because of his own experience he understood that accident of circumstance could make ordinary individuals vulnerable to desperation, hunger, cruelty and crime. Dickens knew that he himself had been fortunate to avoid a fate like Oliver Twist. Dickens showed the system’s treatment of innocent child born and raised in workhouse system. When Oliver was born, the narrator tells us that he could be anybody – the child of a nobleman or a beggar. One of the parish authorities, Mr. Bumble chose the name “Oliver Twist”. Mr. Bumble said that it was time for “Twist” name. “Twist” implies death by hanging. But in reality his mother Agnes gave birth to virtuous boy. Oliver is an orphan and a pauper, meaning his “fate” it more or less determined from his birth. His place must be in “a low” position forever. Although he was born in workhouse, he was inherently good. His father inherited enough money to be able to pass some on to Oliver. We see the ups and downs of the life of a ten year old boy. Mr. Bumble begins to realize the effect that Oliver has had on others in the workhouse when he asked for more gruel. He was sold into apprenticeship for 5 pounds. He didn’t want to stay at the coffin-shop, and he decided to take his “fate” into his own hands. He was a small and undernourished boy, but he was ready to risk his life in order to escape his circumstance. He attempted to move his fortune in London. But in London he again became a victim of terrible circumstances. Monks and Oliver were half-brothers. Monks wanted to eradicate Oliver’s past. Oliver was at last informed of everything having to do with his own history. At the end of the novel he lives at a country parsonage with the Maylies and those who care about him. Oliver has found the family that cares for him. It seems to me not only terrible circumstance but also some kind people help to determine Oliver’s fate.
