The Creative Impulse”  “Do you like the story? Why? (Creative Impulse)

Somerset Maugham’s “Creative Impulse” story is easy to compose and easy to read. It does not have a lot of emotionally colored words. It is as simple and straightforward as possible. And the irony in each phrase about the main character forms its effect of reader perception.

Describing the work of Mrs. Forrester, the narrator then makes it clear that the writer, absolutely confident in the correctness of everything that she says, writes and does, was not very educated and very poorly versed in what she wrote.
Irony becomes for the author the main means of conveying his own emotional and evaluative attitude to heroine. He makes fun of literally every feature of her character, appearance and behavior. His desire to prove the failure of Mrs. Forrester, her incompetence is due to the fact that the author himself has the snobbery of such a writer as Mrs. Forrester, the pretentiousness of her creations, their unbearable boredom cause an irreconcilable attitude. He shows how invariably each of her new books was praised by “all subtle connoisseurs” and how she did not want to notice, and most importantly, buy her “vulgar mob” books.

All the books of Mrs. Forrester, she believed, were very serious, for the ordinary reader. She becomes popular writer after she decides to write her first detective story, having received for this the so-called “creative impulse” from her husband and his mistress who escaped from her. After Mrs. Forrester arrives at the house where her husband and his mistress live, they had an interesting conversation. Mr. Forrester makes it clear to his wife that the life he lived with her was alien to him. As it turned out, they were very different. He also expressed his opinion about her literary work and his new chosen one joined him in this. They suddenly asked Mrs. Forrester why she was not writing detective stories. And they even offered her a couple of interesting stories. Mrs. Forrester laughed at their words, explaining that detective stories were for the general mass of readers. Nevertheless, returning home, she saw a man who, according to the description, looked like a person from the plot proposed by Mr. Forrester. Her heart was beating faster and at that moment she decides to write a detective story.

With this story, Maugham expressed his attitude to the works written by writers torn off from this world, who do not want to read precisely because their very personality repels and not even their books themselves.
In the taunting taunts of the author at Mrs. Forrester, the voice of the writer is heard, telling in his story that writing should be in a clear and accessible language, that writing should only be about what you understand and, most importantly, writing should be fun.
