William Somerset Maugham - British writer, born in 1874

William Somerset Maugham - British writer, born in 1874. He was educated at the University of Heidelberg, where he studied literature and philosophy, after his first unsuccessful work, the biography of the composer Meyerbeer, he entered medical school and worked in hospitals. However, he did not abandon attempts to write, and after the success of his first works, the novel "Lisa from Lambert" and the play "Lady Frederick", he began to devote more time to literature. After World War I and the work of an agent of British intelligence, he finally concentrated all his strength on writing dramatic works, becoming one of the most popular writers of the 1930s. One of his works is also a short story “Creative Impulse”.

In this story, the main character is 57-year-old Mrs. Forrester, a successful and popular writer. However, it was not always popular, critics evaluated the talent with which she wrote her books, but the reader often avoided it. Miss Forrester owes her success to a detective story that came to her mind after a very successful party, which she often arranged for friends, and many wanted to go to the party, but few managed to become Miss Forrester's guest. Miss Forrester also had a husband, Albert, an ordinary and boring businessman in a shabby jacket, the guests often wondered why she married him, but the hostess always protected him.

I wonder why she married him, but the hostess has always protected him. However, at the next party the maid handed her a letter from her husband, and it turned out that, despite the fact that Albert was always with his wife, he was unhappy and didn’t like art like her, so he decided to leave her with the girl cook he loved . The guests, of course, advised Mrs. Forrester not to leave it all so and regain her husband, however, despite the sadness, she decided to let him go, and after a while she had the idea to write a detective story that made her a popular writer.

I liked this story, because, despite the small volume, it conveys an important idea very well: any even a very bad event can suddenly have positive consequences, you just need to accept reality and never give up.
