While playing with Jimmy Langton's troupe, Julia met Michael. Michael was so handsome that Julia fell in love with him at first sight. However, Michael did not reciprocate Julia. Michael is an intelligent and ambitious young man who knows that beauty is his greatest strength. But since beauty is never eternal, he decides to become a good actor. The most pleasant trait in Michael's character is his good nature. Michael was the son of a colonel, graduated from Cambridge, and his family did not overly approve of his chosen acting career. Julia understood all this and contrived to create and play the role of a girl who could please his parents. She achieved her goal - Michael proposed to her. But even after the engagement, nothing changed in their relationship. Michael treated her with tenderness and admiration, it was easy for him to be with her, he trusted her, but Julia knew perfectly well that he was not in love with her.

The first year of their marriage would have been very turbulent if not for Michael's even nature. Unable to influence Michael's behavior, Julia was insanely jealous of him for everyone and everything, made scandals. When the First World War broke out, Michael went to the front.
