Georgy Ivanovich Rerberg

(September 28, 1937 - July 28, 1999) - Soviet and Russian cameraman, Honored Artist of the RSFSR (1980), People's Artist of the RSFSR (1988). He had the reputation of co-directing directors in the construction of artistic reality.

The Rerberg genus has Swedish roots. The father of George was the artist I. F. Rerberg (1892-1957), the mother was the cellist Galina Kozolupova, the daughter of the national artist S. M. Kozolupova.

In 1960 he graduated from the Faculty of Cameraman VGIK (workshop of Boris Volchek). He worked at the film studio "Mosfilm".

Debut work in 1965 - the film "First Teacher". Already in this black-and-white film, his creative features emerged: the severity of the visual decision, compositional clarity, documentary style.

In 1967 he shot a black-and-white film "The History of Asya Klyachina, who loved, but did not get married." However, the film was released only 20 years later. In 1989, for his work in this film, G. Rerberg was nominated for a Nika award for best cinematography, and in 1990 he was awarded the State Prize of the RSFSR named after the Vasiliev brothers among the filmmakers.

In the color cinema his talent of landscape painter and portrait painter was revealed. In the film “Uncle Vanya”, the comparison of black-and-white and color shots becomes dramatic. This technique was developed in the “Mirror”, where the unreal and amazing concreteness of dreams is transmitted in black and white scenes, and in color scenes the beauty and spirituality of the childhood world, the drama of its loss. Various camera crews (reporting, rapid, intraframe camera movement, high-contrast lighting) skillfully realize the idea, create a unique image structure of the film.

During the filming of "Stalker" between Rerberg and director A. Tarkovsky there was a conflict situation because of the damaged film "Kodak", which was filmed. At the request of the director, Rerberg was suspended from filming, almost the entire film was re-shot by new cameraman A. Knyazhinsky. The documentary tape by Igor Mayboroda, Rerberg and Tarkovsky, tells about this conflict. The reverse side of “Stalker” (2008).

At the Venice Film Festival in 1981, Rerberg was awarded a special mention by the jury for his work in the film “Starfall” directed by Igor Talankin.

In the 1990s, Rerberg began to make films less and less, and focused his main activity on advertising for television. It was he who, as an operator, shot most of the “World History, Bank Imperial” commercials.

He was married to actress Valentina Titova, who during the shooting of the film “Father Sergiy” went to him from her husband, director Vladimir Basov.

G. Rerberg died of a heart attack. He was buried at Vvedenskoye cemetery next to his father and mother.
