Forgiveness Sunday

I want to tell you about one unusual spring holiday in Russia. It’s called Forgiveness Sunday. This holiday is a about forgiveness and reconciliation. On this day, it is usually accepted to ask for forgiveness from all offended persons by intentional or unintentional acts. This tradition appeared a long time ago, but is still very relevant. When a person asks for forgiveness for bad actions, thoughts or behavior, he not only reconciles with people, but also finds peace with himself, develops himself.

Not everyone knows that the roots of this holiday came from Egypt. Such a country is famous not only for the many years of enslavement of the Jewish people, but also for providing protection for Jesus and His Mother. After that, many monasteries opened in Egypt. Russians respected and observed this holiday a lot. Often distant relatives came from other cities to ask for forgiveness for the old offense. After the words of apologies, warm words, hugs and kisses followed. Relatives in the other world also asked for forgiveness. Even kings and princes asked for forgiveness from their subordinates, clearing their spirit to participate in the Great Lent.

Forgiveness Sunday completes «Pancake week». In all churches special forgive services are held for the spiritual cleansing, their pacification and deliverance from all internal evil. As for me, I think it is very interesting and unusual holiday but I don’t think that a person needs a special day to apologize to the close person.
