Travel to St. Petersburg

I was in St. Petersburg in 2016. This is a very beautiful city. There are many beautiful buildings, old houses, museums and beautiful places. In my essay, I want to talk about some sights of St. Petersburg that impressed me.

First, I will tell you a little about the city itself.
Saint-Petersburg is often called a northern capital of Russia. The city was founded by Peter I in 1703. The city consists of 44 islands connected to each other with beautiful bridges. Name of the city changed several times. At first the city was called Saint-Petersburg but it was renamed to Petrograd in 1914. Then in 1924 the city was given the name Leningrad. In 1991 the old name Saint-Petersburg was given back to the city.

Of all the attractions, I liked Peterhof the most. This is the former imperial country residence founded by Peter the Great at the beginning of the 18th century. He is called the "Russian Versailles". On its territory there are many fountains, flower beds, alleys and pavilions that remind of the imperial era of Russian history.
Another place that I really liked in St. Petersburg is the State Hermitage Museum. The Hermitage is the largest museum in Russia. He is on the list of the most valuable works of art in the world. Hermitage expositions occupy 6 buildings. About 3 million exhibits are stored here.

I also visited Palace Square. This is the main square of St. Petersburg. She is in front of the Winter Palace. It is almost twice as large as Red Square. In the center of the square is a monumental column of Alexandria. It is dedicated to the victory of the Russian Empire over the army of Napoleon. The column was erected by decree of Nicholas I.

In Petersburg, I liked the building of the Main Admiralty. It is located on the banks of the Neva. One of the symbols of the Northern capital is the figure of the ship, which is located on the spire of the Admiralty. Since 2012, the headquarters of the command of the Russian Navy has been in the Building of the Main Admiralty.

One of the days of my trip to St. Petersburg, I went to the Peter and Paul Fortress. The Peter and Paul Fortress is a defensive structure and the historical center of St. Petersburg at the beginning of the 18th century. The construction of the city began with this fortress. The fortress was never used for its intended purpose (it served as a prison). In the fortress, I was impressed by architecture, ramparts, bastions, front gates and administrative buildings.

The Bronze Horseman is a monument dedicated to the founder of the city, Peter the Great, located on Senate Square. Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin wrote about this monument in the eponymous poem The Bronze Horseman.
Walking on Peter I got to Nevsky Prospect. This is the most famous street of the Northern capital. There are a lot of beautiful buildings on Nevsky Prospekt. It stretches for 4.5 kilometers. The avenue was considered the main entrance to the city from Moscow. There are many architectural monuments. Nevsky Prospect is a popular place with a special atmosphere. Here you can take a walk, arrange meetings and shopping.

Neva River is the main waterway of St. Petersburg. This is one of the largest rivers in the North-West of Russia. The Neva Embankments is an independent attraction of St. Petersburg. From here you can observe the nocturnal breeding bridges or just stroll and enjoy the panorama of the city.

There are a lot of attractions in St. Petersburg. This is a city with its own atmosphere. In St. Petersburg there are a lot of historical buildings, cathedrals, churches, monasteries, bridges, squares and palaces. I really liked this city. And I’ll come to St. Petersburg more than once to walk along its streets and around museums. You can fall in love with Saint-Petersburg. Having come to this city once you want to come back here again and again. You'll especially like it if you visit Saint-Petersburg at the end of May or at the start of June. It’s right the time of white night here. That means it’s not dark at night. Such a geographical singularity. And besides the weather here is very warm and sunny in this period of time.
