Columbia University is one of the world's most important research centers and at the same time a distinctive and outstanding learning environment for undergraduates and graduate students in many scientific and professional fields. The University recognizes the importance of its location in new York city and seeks to link its research and training to the vast resources of the Great metropolis. It aims to attract diverse and international teachers and students, support research and teaching on global issues, and build academic relationships with many countries and regions. He expects that all areas of the University will develop knowledge and training at the highest level and bring the results of their efforts to the world.

Columbia University is a private, Ivy League, research university in Upper Manhattan, New York City . It was established in 1754 as King's College by royal charter of George II of Great Britain and is the oldest college in New York State as well as the fifth chartered institution of higher learning in the country, making Columbia one of nine colonial colleges founded before the Declaration of Independence

Columbia is one of the fourteen founding members of the Association of American Universities, and was the first school in the United States to grant the M.D. degree.

The university is organized into twenty schools, including Columbia College, the School of Engineering and Applied Science, and the School of General Studies. The university also has global research outposts in Amman, Beijing, Istanbul, Paris, Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, Asuncion and Nairobi.

Columbia annually administers the Pulitzer Prize . Notable alumni and former students (including those from King's College) include five Founding Fathers of the United States; nine Justices of the United States Supreme Court ; 20 living billionaires ; 29 Academy Award winners ; and 29 heads of state, including three United States Presidents . Campus Columbia's main campus occupies more than six city blocks, or 32 acres (13 ha), in Morningside Heights, New York City, a neighborhood that contains a number of academic institutions. The university owns over 7,800 apartments in Morningside Heights, housing faculty, graduate students, and staff. Almost two dozen undergraduate dormitories (purpose-built or converted) are located on campus or in Morningside Heights. Columbia University has an extensive underground tunnel system more than a century old, with the oldest portions predating the present campus. Some of these remain accessible to the public, while others have been cordoned off .

Columbia University is home to a rich diversity of undergraduate, graduate, and professional publications. The Columbia Daily Spectator is the nation's second-oldest student newspaper; and The Blue and White, a monthly literary magazine established in 1890. Inside New York is an annual guidebook to New York City, written, edited, and published by Columbia undergraduates. Through a distribution agreement with Columbia University Press, the book is sold at major retailers and independent bookstores.
