The Creative Impulse”  “Do you like the story? Why?

Maugham's story "The Source of Inspiration" is very surprising. It is not literary, but artistic, and the topic touched by the genius of English literature, like a hundred years ago, is brilliant in its discussion, and in our time this topic is very relevant. An interesting fascinating story is combined here with a typical situation, which the author plays with inimitable humor.

A certain writer - Mrs. Forrester, being an apologist for "pure art" all her life, suddenly writes a detective story in view of some vital circumstances, and in a moment becomes not only popular in her country and abroad, but also earns enough money to comfortably live the remainder of her Days. A rare book meets an equally benevolent reception for readers and critics, and Mrs. Forrester should have enjoyed it. She had a special talent. People liked her, so do the critics. She had this special humor and aristocratic style, which just educated people, could understand.

Gradually, on the pages of the story, we see the real face of Mrs. Forrester, as well as the circumstances of her masterpiece creation.

Old as the world, the story of how Mrs. Forrester left her husband, having fled from her with the cook, made the writer forget that she never sold her talent and proudly held the banner of pure art. And the surprising thing is that she talked to her husband calm, and with a shade of respect to the cook. It is very clever, no hysterics. She even listened to his advice. For sure, we have something to learn from this woman.

The story "The Source of Inspiration" tells us what is suitable to create and what does not. Moreover, it was in such stories of the writer that the notorious "quadrature of the circle" found so unsuccessfully sought, but apparently did not find his hero Mrs. Forrester.

I can tell that I like this story and dislike at the same time. It is unusual as I told in the first paragraph, but I think that the beginning is too long, I need action from the first minutes, and not discussion of human’s characteristics. This is not disrespect to the author, just this style is not my “cup of tea”.
